Kew Gardens Hills — known simply as KGH — is one of Queens’ most established and self-sufficient Orthodox communities. Main Street is the spine: kosher supermarkets, glatt meat restaurants, dairy spots, and takeout line both sides for several blocks, all within easy walking distance of the neighborhood’s dozen-plus shuls.
The community spans the full range of Orthodox hashkafot — Young Israel anchors the Modern Orthodox presence, Agudath Israel draws the more yeshivish families, and multiple Sephardic and Bukharian congregations serve a large Mizrachi population. Proximity to Queens College adds a kiruv dimension through Chabad on Campus. Day school options are strong: YCQ (Yeshiva of Central Queens) has operated here since 1941.
Housing runs the gamut from pre-war apartment buildings and small multi-families to larger rental complexes like The Opal. Prices are notably lower than comparable Orthodox neighborhoods in Manhattan, the Five Towns, or Teaneck, making KGH a real option for young families priced out of Long Island.
The eruv — one of the first established in a major US metropolitan area, approved by Rav Moshe Feinstein — is checked weekly before Shabbat. Status hotline: 718-849-ERUV (3788).
