Silver Spring / Kemp Mill

Widely regarded as the largest Orthodox community between Baltimore and Miami — Kemp Mill packs over a dozen shuls, multiple day schools, and a full kosher shopping strip on Lamberton Drive into a compact, eruv-covered suburban pocket minutes from the Beltway.

Kosher markets

  • Shalom Kosher Market · Full-service kosher supermarket anchoring the Arcola Ave shopping strip

Kosher dining

  • Ben Yehuda Pizza · Kosher Israeli pizza and dairy on Arcola Ave
  • The Kosher Pastry Oven · Kosher bakery and café on the Arcola Ave strip

Kemp Mill is the Orthodox heart of the Washington DC metro area. The Lamberton Drive corridor is the kosher commercial strip: Shalom Kosher Market anchors grocery needs, with Ben Yehuda Pizza, The Kosher Pastry Oven, and more within steps. Kemp Mill Synagogue (KMS) and Young Israel Shomrai Emunah (YISE — the oldest Orthodox shul in Montgomery County, founded 1951) are the community anchors. The Yeshiva of Greater Washington, one of the premier Torah institutions on the East Coast, has its boys and girls campuses in the neighborhood.

The Silver Spring Eruv covers approximately 13.75 square miles, encompassing Kemp Mill, Hillandale, White Oak, and Wheaton — making a car-free Shabbat genuinely practical for most of the community. Berman Hebrew Academy provides Modern Orthodox day school from Pre-K through 12th grade in nearby Rockville.
