Moving to Riverdale: a practical guide
Housing and what it costs
Riverdaleβs housing splits in two. Co-op and rental apartments in the large buildings along the Henry Hudson Parkway and Independence Avenue are the usual entry point, and cost noticeably less than comparable space in Manhattan. Private houses, on the hilly streets above the river, are the top of the market. Figures are approximate as of mid-2026 β use the apartment search above for live listings.
Picking an area
The communityβs center is the stretch where the Riverdale Jewish Center on Independence Avenue and the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale on the Henry Hudson Parkway sit a few blocks apart, with the Young Israel of Riverdale and the Riverdale Minyan close by. North Riverdale, around the Young Israel Ohab Zedek of North Riverdale and Yonkers on Riverdale Avenue, is quieter and borders Yonkers. The hills are steep, so check the actual walk to shul, not just the distance on the map.
Kosher and daily life
Riverdale has local kosher shopping and restaurants, and the Riverdale Mikvah is on the Henry Hudson Parkway. For larger shopping trips many families drive to nearby communities. Riverdale has a community eruv β see the note above for how to check it.
Schools
SAR Academy is the anchor day school in Riverdale, and families also look at schools in Manhattan and Westchester. Confirm current admissions and busing directly with each school.
Commuting
Metro-Northβs Hudson Line, express buses and the 1 train all run to Manhattan, which is what lets Riverdale feel suburban while keeping a city commute. It fits families who want New York City without Manhattan prices or Manhattan density.
