Rhawnhurst is the working-class counterweight to the Main Line: a dense, yeshivish-leaning Orthodox community in Northeast Philadelphia where row homes and twins cost a fraction of Lower Merion. Congregation B’nai Israel–Ohev Zedek on Castor Avenue is the community’s center — built in the 1970s when two older shuls merged — joined by Ahavas Torah on Rhawn Street, Beth Midrash Harav B’nai Jacob on Algon Avenue, Congregation Dibrot Eliyahu, and the Lubavitcher Center.
House of Kosher on Bustleton Avenue is the region’s all-kosher supermarket under Keystone K supervision and draws shoppers from across greater Philadelphia. Politz Hebrew Academy serves the community’s boys and girls, and the Abraham Offen Mikvah is on Loretto Avenue.
