The Upper East Side is Manhattan’s second Orthodox center, and it is built differently from the West Side: rather than many mid-sized shuls, its community gathers in a handful of large, long-established ones. Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun is on East 85th Street, Park East Synagogue on East 67th, and Fifth Avenue Synagogue and the Sephardic Edmond J. Safra Synagogue sit around the corner from each other on East 62nd and 63rd. The Altneu, founded in 2022, is on East 70th; Congregation Orach Chaim is on Lexington Avenue in the 90s; and further east, toward York Avenue, are Chabad of the Upper East Side, the Manhattan Sephardic Congregation and the Yorkville Synagogue.

The community is mostly Modern Orthodox and established, with a strong Sephardic presence. Ramaz, the co-ed Modern Orthodox day school tied to Kehilath Jeshurun, has its lower school on East 85th Street and its upper school on East 78th; the Park East Day School and the Manhattan High School for Girls are in the East 60s and 70s. There are two mikvaos β€” at Chabad of the Upper East Side and at Fifth Avenue Synagogue.

Note on the eruv: the Manhattan Eruv says it now encloses most of the borough of Manhattan, and publishes its map and its weekly status at eruv.nyc. Its site does not describe the East Side boundary street by street, so check the map for your own block.
