Moving to Milwaukee: a practical guide
Housing and what it costs
Milwaukee is one of the most affordable communities on ShulMap, particularly in Sherman Park, where older homes cost a fraction of what they do in the Northeast. The East Side and Glendale are separate ZIP codes with their own prices. Figures change fast โ use the apartment search above for live listings.
Picking an area
Choose the neighborhood first. Sherman Park on the west side is the most yeshivish, around Beth Jehudah and the Kollel. The East Side, near the lake, centers on Lake Park Synagogue and Lubavitch House. Glendale, just north of the city, has Anshe Sfard Kehillat Torah, Ohr HaTorah and Chabad on North Green Bay Avenue. They are several miles apart.
Kosher and daily life
Kosher food is available but limited; families plan meat and specialty shopping. Each of the three neighborhoods has its own mikvah โ at Beth Jehudah, the Mikvah Chaya Mushka on the East Side, and the Glendale Mikvah at Ohr HaTorah.
Schools
The Yeshiva Elementary School is in Sherman Park, the Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study is a boysโ high school on the East Side, and the Torah Academy of Milwaukee is in Glendale. Confirm current admissions, tuition and transportation directly with each school.
Who it fits
Families who want a real Orthodox community with schools and mikvaos at some of the lowest housing costs on the map, and who are comfortable with Midwestern winters.
