Moving to (or visiting) Orlando: a practical guide

Housing and what it costs

Dr. Phillips and Southwest Orlando are suburban Central Florida β€” single-family homes and gated communities near the shuls and the attractions corridor, at price points well below the coastal South Florida Orthodox neighborhoods. Figures move with the market β€” use the apartment search above for live listings, and note this is a smaller community, so it’s worth speaking with the shuls about where families are concentrated.

The community

Two congregations carry communal life: the Orlando Torah Center (Orthodox, daily minyanim, with the Orlando Torah Academy day school) and Chabad of South Orlando. It’s a small kehilla, so newcomers and visitors are best served reaching out to a shul directly to plan around minyan times and Shabbos hospitality.

Kosher and daily life

No dedicated kosher supermarket, but the kosher sections of the Trader Joe’s on Sand Lake Road, Publix, and the BJ’s near Millenia cover a weekly shop, and the shuls can point you to kosher restaurants and catering β€” useful for the many families passing through on Central Florida trips.

Eruv and Shabbos

The community maintains an eruv in the Dr. Phillips area; because status can change, confirm with the Orlando Torah Center or Chabad of South Orlando before Shabbos, and consult your local rav. The nearest mikvah is a drive north in the greater Orlando area.

Getting around

Orlando is entirely a car community outside of Shabbos, with the attractions, both airports, and I-4 all a short drive from Dr. Phillips. Within the eruv, families and visitors walk to shul on Shabbos.
