Picking an area
The practical question is proximity to a shul, because this is a compact community spread across a large, low-density city. Ahavas Torah on North Scottsdale Road is the Orthodox anchor; Chabad of Scottsdale is further south on the same road, and Congregation Beth Tefillah sits east on Shea Boulevard. Living within the Valley Eruv and within walking distance of whichever of those you would daven in is the constraint that should drive the search — check the map above, since distances in Scottsdale are longer than they look.
Kosher and daily life
Scottsdale draws on greater Phoenix’s shared infrastructure rather than running a full commercial strip of its own: more than a dozen kosher restaurants across the Valley, kosher groceries, bakeries, and caterers, and several mikvaot. Some of that is a drive southwest into Phoenix. Confirm current hashgacha and hours directly before relying on any specific establishment.
Schools
There is no separate Scottsdale day-school system — families use the metro’s nine Jewish day schools serving over a thousand children K–12, which include elementary options with coed and single-gender tracks, a boys’ mesivta, a girls’ high school, and Chabad schools. Several sit closer to the Phoenix corridor than to Scottsdale, so school choice here often means a real commute. Arizona’s tuition tax-credit program applies regardless. Who it fits
Scottsdale suits families who want newer housing, proximity to north-Valley employment, and a smaller, more intimate kehilla, and who are willing to drive for the wider infrastructure and to pay a premium over Phoenix for it. Families who want maximum density of minyanim and the shortest school run should look hard at the North Central Phoenix corridor first.
