About Las Vegas
Las Vegas’s observant community lives in Summerlin, on the western edge of the valley about twenty minutes from the Strip — a master-planned suburb that has almost nothing to do with the city’s reputation. The Summerlin Shul on Village Center Circle, founded in 2011 and run by the Community Kollel of Greater Las Vegas, is a Chofetz Chaim–affiliated kehilla and the community’s Torah anchor. Bet Yosef Community Center on Vegas Drive serves the Sephardic community, and Chabad of Summerlin on Regatta Drive is one of roughly eight Chabad houses across the metro.
Young Israel Aish, on West Sahara Avenue, anchors the southern end where Summerlin, The Lakes and Peccole Ranch converge. Day-to-day kosher shopping runs through Smith’s Kosher Experience on North Rampart Boulevard and the Albertsons kosher market on South Fort Apache Road, both mainstream supermarkets with dedicated kosher operations.
Two things drive relocation here: Nevada has no state income tax, and housing in Summerlin — while not cheap by Sunbelt standards — buys considerably more than comparable money in Los Angeles, which is where a large share of the community came from. The other steady source of traffic is visitors: observant families come through Las Vegas constantly for conventions, simchas and trips, and Summerlin is where the minyanim, the eruv and the kosher groceries are.
