This is the choice most families relocating to Orthodox Toronto are actually making. Bathurst Manor and Clanton Park are the older community, inside the City of Toronto in North York, roughly along Bathurst between Sheppard and Wilson. Thornhill is the newer and larger community further north in Vaughan. The Manor is more compact and walkable, closer to downtown, on the subway line, and generally cheaper. Thornhill has more schools, more shuls, newer housing and more space.

There is a municipal distinction underneath that which matters more than it sounds: North York is City of Toronto, while Thornhill is in Vaughan, York Region. Different property taxes, different school boards, different municipal services. Model both properly rather than treating the two as one continuous Bathurst corridor.

Housing and what it costs

Post-war single-family housing on modest lots, priced below the equivalent in Thornhill. The Manor’s streets are established and the stock is older, so budget for the maintenance profile of an older house — and if you are planning to expand or rebuild, check what the City of Toronto permits on that specific lot before you buy. Picking a street

The shuls here are scattered through the residential streets rather than lined up on one strip, which is characteristic of a community that grew house by house. Clanton Park (Kahal Machzikei Hadas) on Lowesmoor Avenue and Or Chaim on Almore Avenue are the best-known kehillos and the usual starting points. Petah Tikva is on Danby Avenue, Kollel Yismach Moshe on Bainbridge, Beth Jacob Toronto on Overbrook Place and Beth Joseph Anshei New York on Edinburgh Drive. Tiferet Israel sits on Sheppard Avenue West, and Tiferes Yaakov and Magen David Sephardic Congregation on or just off Bathurst. Pick the kehilla, then look at the blocks around it.

Kosher, schools and daily life

The Bathurst corridor carries kosher retail along much of its length, and the Manor sits at the southern end of it — with more of the newer shopping concentrated further north toward Thornhill. Schools serve the community locally, though the larger range is north; confirm current admissions and busing directly with each school. Being on the subway line is the practical advantage here: if anyone in the household commutes downtown, this is the community that makes that workable.
