About Pomona
Pomona is the newest link in the chain of Monsey spillover communities, and the smallest. Families began arriving in numbers only within the last decade or so, drawn by the same forces that built up Wesley Hills and Airmont before it β Monseyβs housing prices and density pushing outward β and the kehilla went from a handful of families to over a hundred within a few years.
What you get is a residential village in the woods north of Monsey, near Harriman State Park, with spacious homes on wooded lots and a genuinely small-town feel. The community is compact enough that people know each other, which is the thing residents mention first and which is difficult to find anywhere else in the Monsey orbit at this point.
For its size, Pomona supports a surprising number of minyanim. The Shul of Pomona Heights on Halley Drive and Khal Avreichim of Pomona on Chestnut Drive anchor the Ashkenazi side; Kehillat Sephardim of Pomona on Cornell Peak serves a Sephardic kehilla; and Khal Mount Ivy on Anderson Road covers the eastern end of the village. Several are Sefard-nusach shtieblach rather than large institutional shuls, which is what you would expect in a community at this stage.
The trade-off is infrastructure. Pomona does not have its own kosher supermarkets, restaurants, mikvaos or yeshivas β those are in Monsey, a short drive south, and families here organise their week around that. New Hempstead, Wesley Hills and Suffern are all immediately adjacent, so the practical catchment is larger than the village itself. Manhattan is roughly forty-five minutes by car.
