Who this suits

New Hempstead is the middle option in the Monsey village belt, in more ways than one. It is geographically between Spring Valley and Pomona, priced between them, and its community leans more Ashkenaz, Yeshivish and Modern Orthodox than the heavily Chassidish villages to the south. Families who want a suburban village with a mid-sized kehilla, without either Spring Valley’s density or Pomona’s isolation, tend to land here.

The address trap — this matters more here than anywhere

New Hempstead has no post office. Virtually every address in the village — homes and shuls alike — reads “Spring Valley, NY 10977”. That same post office also covers parts of Wesley Hills and Chestnut Ridge. The result is that houses in New Hempstead village are routinely advertised as Spring Valley, at Spring Valley’s implied price point, when the village, the taxes and the school district are all different. Before you make an offer, confirm the actual village and tax jurisdiction on the property itself. This is the most common and most expensive confusion in the area.

Housing and what it costs

Residential-suburban single-family housing on decent lots, priced above Spring Valley and generally below Wesley Hills. Rockland County property taxes are significant and should be modelled explicitly rather than estimated — they change the monthly figure materially. Picking a street

Union Road and New Hempstead Road are the established spines, carrying Kehillat New Hempstead and Summit-Park Shul respectively. Pennington Way has two kehillos within a few doors of each other — Kehillas Zichron Yitzchok and Khal Fristik Riminov — which makes that immediate area attractive if you want choice within a short walk. Kehilas Zichron Yaakov on Durante Court and Ohaiv Shalom on Bridle Road serve their own blocks. As everywhere in these villages, pick the shul first and the street second.

Kosher, schools and daily life

New Hempstead is residential and has no commercial core by design. Kosher supermarkets, restaurants, mikvaos, yeshivas and Bais Yaakovs are in Monsey and Spring Valley, both a few minutes’ drive. Plan on driving for shopping and school runs; the village is quiet precisely because none of that is inside it.
