Orthodox Jewish communities in Canada

6 communities compared — 63 shuls, 4 kosher stores and restaurants, 4 day schools and 6 mikvaos on the map.

Canada's Orthodox community is concentrated in its two largest cities. In Toronto, it runs along the Bathurst Street corridor — Thornhill to the north, with the highest concentration of Jewish residents in the country, and Bathurst Manor and Clanton Park, the original Orthodox neighbourhood, further south.

In Montreal, the Modern Orthodox, yeshivish and Sephardic community centers on Côte-Saint-Luc and Hampstead, and the Chasidic kehillos on Outremont and Mile End. Montreal is generally less expensive than Toronto, and its large French-speaking Sephardic community gives it a character of its own.

Counts are what ShulMap has mapped so far, not a census — the largest communities have many more shuls and shtieblach than we list. A dot means we have not mapped that category there yet, not that it has none. The price band is relative within each area; median home is the US Census figure for the community's ZIP (2020–2024), as valued by owners. Frequently asked questions

What are the Orthodox Jewish communities in Canada?

ShulMap maps 6 Orthodox communities in Canada: Bathurst & Lawrence, Côte-Saint-Luc, Thornhill, Bathurst Manor, Outremont and Bathurst & Steeles. Together they have 63 shuls on the map, plus 4 kosher stores and restaurants, 4 day schools and 6 mikvaos. Each has its own page with a walkable shul map.

Which community in Canada has the most shuls?

Bathurst & Lawrence has the most on ShulMap, with 21 mapped, followed by Côte-Saint-Luc (10) and Thornhill (10). Shul count is a rough guide to community size, not to fit — a smaller community with a daily minyan near housing you can afford may suit a family better than a bigger one.

Which communities in Canada have a mikvah and day schools?

ShulMap has mikvaos mapped in Bathurst & Lawrence, Thornhill, Bathurst Manor and Bathurst & Steeles. Day schools are mapped in Bathurst & Lawrence, Thornhill and Bathurst Manor. A community without one on the map may still have one we have not added yet, and families commonly use institutions in a neighboring community.

Is there an eruv in these communities?

It differs community by community, and ShulMap never infers one. Each community page carries its own eruv detail with the source and the date it was last checked. Always confirm with your local rav or the eruv hotline before carrying on Shabbos.

Walking distance: Walking-distance circles are approximate and do not assert a halachic standard. Confirm what is walkable for you locally.
